ROHTAK, India – Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was today sentenced to two terms of ten years. The terms are to run consecutively, making a total of 20 years.
He was today sentenced by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court set up in the Sunaria jail in Rohtak where the Dera chief was kept since Saturday when the Haryana High Court, Panchkula pronounced a verdict, which threw his supporters into a riotous mood, killing and maiming innocent Indians and destroying properties.
The Dera chief Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was sentenced for raping two women 18 years ago.
Speaking after the verdict, SK Garg, counsel to the convicted Dera chief said he will appeal against the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court judgement sentencing him to 20 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 30 lakh fine in the two rape cases.
“We urged the court that a lenient view should be taken as the case was 18 years old and there was no other case during the period,” Garg said and prayed for “minimum sentence” since the Guru has been involved in social work
