UMUAHIA, Nigeria – Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia midfielder, Shedrack Asiegbu says he will donate half of the N150,000 awarded him for emerging the winner of the “VAT Wonder Goal 6” to the “SCHOOL OF THE BLIND”, Afaraukwu, in Umuahia North Local Government Area.

Speaking to www.abiawarriorsfc.com, an obviously elated Asiegbu expressed gratitude to God for the honour, as well as his coaches for giving him the opportunity and his fellow players for their support.

“I want to thank God first for giving me the enablement to play football. I also remember my coaches for believing in me as well as my. follow players without whom it would not have been easy for me to win the award”, he said.

The Umuopara, Umuahia born left-footed player won the award after grabbing the highest number of votes in a poll that also had NPFL top scorer, Stephen Odey of MFM, Lagos and Akwa United’s Musa Newman for the match Day 25 edition.

Goals netted by the trio were among the 18 scored on week 25 and at the end of voting, a total of 731 fans voted on the LMC website while another 361 voted on their twitter account. Out of the 731 voters on the LMC website 335 preferred Asiegbu’s goal while Newman’s goal attracted 209 votes. Odey’s goal was supported by 187 voters. But twitter users preferred Odey’s goal giving him 184 of the 361 votes they cast, leaving Asiegbu on 90 and Newman on 87.

So cumulatively, Asiegebu led the pack by polling 425 of the 1,092 votes cast while Odey came second on 371 whereas Newman got a total of 296 to place third. Asiegbu thus becomes the 6th VAT wonder Goal winner since it was introduced earlier this year joining the likes of Ayo Saka of Rivers United of Port-Harcourt, Ubong Friday of Akwa United of Uyo, Salefu Ochowechi of Remo Stars of Sagamu, FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s Pascal Seka and Ahmed Usman of Wikki Tourists of Bauchi.

The award carries a reward of N150,000 but the winner must donate half of the amount to a charity of his choice located within the state where the club is based. The VAT Wonder Goal is an initiative of the League Management Company, organizers of the Nigeria professional Football League and supported by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as a social investment to drive tax education and deepen clubs and community engagement.
