AGEGE, Lagos, Nigeria – A 72-year-old retired military officer, Mr. Samuel Adebamigbe on Wednesday pleaded with an Agege Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his 30-year-old marriage over alleged adultery and that his wife has pegged sex to once per week.

Samuel, who resides at No. 88, Ajayi Road, Modupe Bus stop, Oke-ira, Ogba, Lagos, told the court that his wife, Iyabo, was having extra marital affairs with several men.

He also claims that his wife insults his family at will, not submissive, troublesome and there is no more love in the marriage. The petitioner, an indigene of Ondo State, alleged that his wife is not trustworthy and has been a wayward person since they got married.

“She lied to me she was from Ondo State but l later realised she is an indigene of Edo. My family were against our union due to her promiscuous ways but because l loved her, l decided to marry her.

“There was a time l found a letter addressed to her lover stating were to meet each other,”.Samuel also told the court that his wife was having an extramarital affairs with a prophet. My wife denied the allegations, claiming she goes to see the man of God for intercessory prayers. The trouble is too much; l can no longer bear her arrogant and promiscuous life style.

The petitioner said that whenever he had sexual intercourse with the respondent, she keeps complaining of stomach upset. I became worried and asked her to have a medical check up.

“Afterwards, my wife told me that the doctor told her to be having sex just once a week. He said he became suspicious and went out to seek solution to the problem.

I was told that due to my wife’s adulterous affairs, a charm was placed on her which is affecting her and causing her stomach upset whenever we have sexual intercourse. Also, that if care is not taken, my life might be at risk so long l keep being intimate with her. “I can no longer love such an adulterous woman.

“She wants me to be having sex with her just once a week which is impossible, this made me to marry a third wife in Ondo State,” he submitted. He told the court that the union was blessed with three children, whom she has turned their backs against him.

“The children don’t have respect for me anymore, they have stopped greeting and talking to me, after all that I have done for them. I am asking for divorce because this marriage is already broken down and replaced with lack of love and threat to life,” he said.

Responding, 50-year-old Iyabo a businesswoman, denied all the allegations against her and told the court that she is not ready for dissolution.

The respondent claimed she had never slept with any man apart from her husband. She urge the court not to dissolve her marriage, that she would want to continue with the marriage but claimed there is no more love.

“All that my husband is claiming is not true; I have never been abusive, even as he often beats me, I still endure the marriage for the sake of my children. He started victimising me at home, not caring and stopped loving me and the children since he got married to his third wife two years ago.

My husband stopped being responsible for me and the children and diverted all his attention and finances to his third wife. He embarrasses me publicly, calling me an adulterous woman and constantly beats me with cable wire at any slightest given opportunity.

“My husband does not respect me as a wife; he claims that l am an illiterate and has gotten married to an educated lady,” she submitted.

The Court President, Mr Philip Williams, appealed to the parties to try and make efforts to reconcile because of their children.

“The court does not encourage divorce; we are here to make peace where possible; the woman should be submissive, if she loves the marriage,” he said. They were later called into the inner chamber for Alternative Dispute Resolution. (ADR)The case was adjourned until July 27 for possible reconciliation of the estranged couple.
