RELIEF UNDERWAY FOR 1700 HOMES ON HAYLING ISLAND
HAYLING ISLAND, United Kingdom – The Havant Borough Council has given a commitment to flag off work to protect 1700 homes from flood and errosion on Hayling Island.
According to the council, work will start on the 15th of March to protect 1700 homes from flood and erosion.
Work at Eastoke, Hayling Island, is expected to take between two to three weeks and will see the beach levels built back up to ensure the correct standard of flood protection, the council said.
The council said work will involve heavy earthmoving machinery working on the beach to transport shingle from areas of sediment build up to depleted groyne bays along Eastoke, in order to restore the beach to the recommended standard of protection.
“This year the material will be extracted from high spots along the open beach towards Beachlands, the beach west of Inn on the Beach and in front of the Coastguard station; and then transported to the Eastoke frontage. Some material may come in via road from a local aggregate supplier and be stockpiled in the Eastoke Corner car park”, the council stated.
The shingle beach along the southern frontage of the Eastoke peninsula is the first line of defence against the threat of coastal flooding and erosion.
Havant Borough Council has appointed Boskalis Westminster Limited to undertake the work. The contractor will maintain a route along the beach marked with cones and warning signs in order to let beach visitors know what’s happening.
The beach will remain open to the public throughout the work, with Havant Borough Council staff onsite to manage public safety – but people are reminded to stay vigilant of moving machinery.
