LAGOS, Nigeria – Residents of White Sand Estate in Ikotun/Igando Local Government Area , Lagos are fleeing their community in droves , while those with who are courageous to remain now live in fear following the onslaught of kidnappers in the area.
We gathered that kidnappers are having free reign in the area on a daily basis and have indeed kidnapped 5 people, with threat to kidnap at least 150 residents for reasons residents of the estate cannot explain.
Today, scores of residents stormed the Lagos State Governors office, and House of Assembly Complex in Alausa, with messages of ‘Save Our Soul’ for Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the Governor of Lagos State.
In a protest letter signed by Chairman of the Community Development Association, Prince Adeniyi Olufemi , the group said that for about two weeks now, kidnappers have been coming to the community to adopt landlords and at the end of the day request for ransom from the victims.
“Part of this community has been deserted because people flee every day. The said bad boys usually come between 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM any day they want to strike and they do come with sophisticated weapons and shoot sporadically”, they said.
They appealed to the governor to come to their aid.
“He please come to our aid, we have exhausted all our means. As at today, a total number of 5 people have been kidnapped. These kidnappers promised to take away 150 people”, they said.
According to them, the first incident took place 2nd December, 2016 when a woman was kidnapped and the second strike happened on the 5th of December, 2016, where two men were kidnapped. The third strike happened on the 13th of December, 2016 where 2 men were kidnapped”, they said.
While calling for heavy presence of Amoured Personnel Carriers (APC) and military men in the area, they said their dastard action on the 13th was akin to a military operation.
“They chased away our vigilantes who could not withstand their superior fire power”, they said.
