London – A man who attempted to travel to Syria with the intention of joining Islamic State of Iraq and Syria(ISIS) has been convicted.
Jabed Hussain, 22 , who resided in Acton, has today, Friday 11 November, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to two charges of preparation of terrorist acts contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
Hussain was charged to have between 21 March 2015 and 28 August 2015 engaged in activities with the intention of committing acts of terrorism engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to that intention.
He is also said to have between 27 August 2015 and 29 April 2016, engaged in activities with the intention of committing acts of terrorism engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to that intention.
In August 2015, Hussain attempted to travel to Syria and was detained by Turkish authorities at the Turkey – Syria border and returned to the UK.
He then changed his name by deed poll to “Ishaq Jabir Hussain” and attempted to apply for a passport in this new name in order to evade the authorities.
He was unsuccessful and was arrested for TACT offences on Thursday, 28 April.
He was charged with two offences and appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 4 May.
Commander Dean Haydon of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) said:
“Hussain made a concerted effort to get to Syria and intended to join ISIS. Changing his name was a poor attempt to evade the authorities which was always destined to fail.”
He will be sentenced 16 December at the Old Bailey.
