5 SURVIVE AS PLANE CRASH KILLS CHAPECOENSE PLAYERS IN COLOMBIA
COLOMBIA – Not less than five people have been rescued alive when a chattered Colombian plane conveying about 81 people, who are members of Brazilian soccer team Associação Chapecoense de Futebol crashed in Colombia.
The Colombian police said only 5 people were rescued alive.
Seventy-six others were not lucky. They all died in the crash, the Colombian Civil Aviation has said.
The aircraft crashed on 28 November in the Colombian region of Antioquia, Cerro Gordo, with the causes currently unknown.
The team was travelling to play against a Medellin team, Atletico Nacional in the final of the Copa Sudamericana in Medellin,.
The aircraft, had 72 passengers and 9 crew members on board, including the Brazilian team’s delegation and members of the media, travelling from Brazil.
The team is based in a small city of Santa Catalina with about 200, 000 residents. President of Brazil has announced a 3-days of national mourning.
Reacting to the development, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed his shock and deep sadness at the tragedy.
“This is a very, very sad day for football,” Infantino said. “We are so sorry to hear about the airplane crash in Colombia, it is shocking and tragic news.
“At this difficult time our thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends. FIFA would like to extend its most heartfelt condolences to the fans of Chapecoense, the football community and media organisations concerned in Brazil.”
