Nairobi, Oct 6, 2016 – All 10 members of Kenya’s Electoral Commission including its chairman, have resigned ahead of the general election coming up in 2017.
KENYA’S ELECTORAL COMMISSIONERS RESIGN AHEAD OF PRESIDENTIAL POLL
Chief of Staff to President of Kenya, Joseph Kinyua who made the announcement said that President Uhuru Kenyatta has received resignation letters from all ten members of the commission.
The resignation is coming following waves of opposition protests in Kenya calling on all of them to go.
Between May and June this year, not less than five people were killed in anti-government protest when police opened fire at opposition parties demanding resignation of the commissioners, after accusing them of bias and corruption.
There are reports that government had offered to reward the commissioners if they quit following pressure from opposition, which have questioned the rationale for paying those linked with corruption.
