Nigeria, August 19, 2016 – Rivers United captain, Festus Austin believes his side can give more heralded sides a run for their money and claim unlikely success in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) this season.
FESTUS AUSTIN CERTAIN OF UNITED’S TITLE BID
United are in fine fettle, a solitary point adrift of the leaders, Enugu Rangers with eight matches remaining. Austin says a number of factors have been responsible for the club’s unlikely push for the top prize in the NPFL this season.
“The secret behind our success has been hard work and discipline. Our coach (Stanley Eguma) has also been extremely important as he continues stressing that we need to fight for the league title. I want to thank the players because they listen to what the coach says and we are assuring our fans that we will continue to fight until we deliver the league title,” Austin told Rivers United Media.
United next travel to Kano for their next NPFL game on Sunday and Austin is well aware of the task his side faces if they are to avoid defeat against Sai Masu Gida.
“Kano is a very difficult place to go to but we have the belief that we will win.We are not going for a draw because at this stage of the season, no one can drop points if they want to be champions. Pillars have very good players and they will have their fans behind them but we will try to win,” he said.
United won the reverse fixture in Port Harcourt 1-0 with Bernard Ovoke scoring the game’s only goal at the Yakubu Gown Stadium.
Rivers United currently occupies third place on the NPFL standings with 50 points from 30 matches while Pillars sit in 10th position with 42 points from 30 games.
