Nigeria, August 20, 2016 – Dr. Hassan Yakubu, a medical doctor in Adamawa State has been arrested by Adamawa State Police Command, for allegedly stealing the only functional kidney of his nephew, Mr. Isa Hamma, a 24-year-old male patient in his clinic.
DOCTOR ARRESTED FOR STEALING PATIENT’S KIDNEY IN NIGERIA
According to rev967.com, a kidney costs $262,000 in the U.S., $62,000 in China, $15,000 in India. The National Kidney Foundation in the United States said that a person may be born with only one kidney. “This condition is called renal agenesis. Another condition, which is called kidney dysplasia, causes a person to be born with two kidneys, but only one of them works. Most people who are born without a kidney (or with only one working kidney) lead normal, healthy lives”, the foundation said on its website.
The arrest of the medical doctor is connected with investigations into alleged theft of the kidney of the 24-year-old male patient. Police Public Relations Officer in Yola, Mr. Othman Abubakar who confirmed the arrest said the medical doctor was interrogated by officers of the criminal investigations department of the command.
The doctor was alleged to have treated Isa Hamma, for stomach complications and stole the kidney in the process. Isa, whose kidney, according to his relative, Umaru Hammanseyo, was allegedly removed, owing to medical errors on the part of the doctor, had been placed on a weekly dialysis at the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe.
Dr. Yakubu had treated Isa, at his Jimeta Clinic, for stomach complications in July 8th, 2016 and ended up operating the victim during which his kidney was removed. Three days after the operation, Umaru said Isa could not urinate. The complications further degenerated with the face and legs of the victim becoming swollen which prompted the family to return to the doctor who later referred them to the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe.
It was at the Gombe hospital that medical officials working with the Federal Medical Centre told them that Isa’s kidney had been “removed.”
