ELDERLY WOMAN, 4 OTHERS CHEAT DEATH IN LAGOS
October 21, 2015 – Five people including an elderly woman have been rescued alive from a 3 storey building that collapsed at Swamp Street, Off Odunfa Street, Lagos Island, Lagos.
The building according to officials of the Lagos State Fire Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) collapsed early Wednesday morning.
Chairman LASEMA, Mr. Michael Akindele said his office received emergency call via 767 at 9am today and that he immediately mobilized his men to the site. He said five people have so far been rescued alive, among them an elderly woman of about 60 years of age.
He said that all relevant agencies involved in emergency operation are already on ground and that rescue operation as still on going. According to him, officials of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Lagos State Building Control Agency(LASCA), Lagos State Safety Commission and Lagos State Fire Service are all involved in the rescue operation. He said that elderly woman who was badly injured is in a stable condition. He said all those injured are receiving medical attention.
But in a text message, Director Lagos State Fire Service, Engr. Rasaq Fadipe provided further insight into ongoing rescue operation.
“A 3 storey building collapsed at Swamp Street, off Odunfa Street, Lagos Island. People were reportedly trapped. But search and rescue operation is on-going.
“Four person had earlier been rescued but now an octogenarian was rescued alive with injuries and she is being treated by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), he said in text message.
