September 19, 2015 – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reiterated its zero tolerance for coup in the zone, stressing that coup plotters in Burkina Faso will be held responsible for overthrowing Interim President Michel Kafando, who came to power November 18, 2014.

The coup was carried out on Thursday by presidential guards loyal to the former president former president Blaise Compaore who was ousted in a popular uprising. The coup took place just as elections were due in October to usher in a new president.

ECOWAS gave the warning just as the African Union (AU) has given the coup plotters Tuesday to return to constitutionality or face sanctions.

“Member countries and organisations of the International Follow-up and Support Group for the Transition in Burkina Faso (GISAT-BF) jointly chaired by ECOWAS, African Union and United Nations, most strongly condemn the coup d’état carried out by members of the Burkinabe defence and security forces. They reiterate the principle of zero tolerance for forceful seizures of power.

“GISAT-BF rejects the disruption of the democratic process and calls for the release of the hostages held since 16 September.

“The Group reaffirms its full support for the Transition at this crucial period for the future of Burkina Faso.

“GISAT-BF warns the perpetrators of the coup, that they will be held liable for their actions and all consequences of the forceful takeover”, ECOWAS said on its website.
