July 8, 2015 – Nigerian Union of Journalist(NUJ) today resumed picketing of THISDAY newspapers, owned by media mogul, Mr. Nduka Obaigbena in continuation of exercise to force the newspaper to meet up with its obligation to pay workers their salary as and when due.
Today’s exercise is the second day of the exercise to compell management of the newspaper to pay the 9 month salary arreas it is owing staff of the establishment.
A statement by Secretary, NUJ, Abimbola Oyetunde, invited all journalists in Lagos to join the train to picket the establishment with effect from 8am.
“Please join us as we picket THISDAY at 35 Creek Road, Apapa over 9 months unpaid salaries on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 by 8. 00am. Today is day two of picketing of ThisDay office over unpaid salaries of workers. Please join us in the struggle at 35, Creek Road, Apapa.No retreat no surrender”, the statement said.
Penultimate week, workers in the printing press shutdown production, forcing the publisher to pay at least one month salary to those in the printery.
We gathered that the publisher does not pay salary to workers but is using the millions he is making from the stable to fund Arise Television which is based in the United Kingdom.
We gathered that THISDAY makes over N5 billion yearly and yet it is unable to pay salaries regularly. Experts are warning that unless the publisher retraces his step, the newspaper may go down the drain.
