July 6, 2015 – The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists(NUJ) will tomorrow, Tuesday, July 7, picket THISDAY newspaper, owned by media mogul, Mr. Nduka Obaigbena.
THISDAY currently owes journalists on its stable salary arrears in excess of 9 months. Already the union is currently mobilising all journalists in Lagos to storm the outfit enmass and shut down production until the publisher is able to make acceptable offers to the union.
A statement by Chairman, Lagos state chapter of NUJ, Mr. Deji Elumoye invited all journalists in Lagos to join the train to picket the establishment with effect from 8am.
“Please join us as we picket THISDAY at 35 Creek Road, Apapa over 9 months unpaid salaries on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 by 8. 00am”, the statement said. Penultimate week, workers in the printing press shutdown production, forcing the publisher to pay at least one month salary to those in the printery.
We gathered that the publisher does not pay salary to workers but is using the millions he is making from the stable to fund Arise Television which is based in the United Kingdom.
We gathered that THISDAY makes over N5 billion yearly and yet it is unable to pay salaries regularly. Experts are warning that unless the publisher retraces his step, the newspaper may go down the drain.
