Lawmakers Order Forceful Evacuation of Trailers from Apapa Road

April 30, 2015 –  Lagos lawmakers have given a directive that trucks parked along the Lagos Apapa express way be removed with immediate effect.

Hon. Rotimi Olowo representing Somolu constituency raised the motion during the plenary session on Monday. Hon Olowo ‘said in other to safeguard lives and properties, NUPENG and Commissioner of police should call the relevant bodies to order.

Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi while contributing to the issue said “the issue calls for serious concern. He maintained that Lagos- Apapa expressway experience is a harrowing one that has been several ly condemned. Hon Ogunyemi observed that Governor Fashola as a responsive person has visited the area severally to appeal to the tanker drivers to maintain decorum and strict compliance with the State traffic Law.

The lawmaker further said that, though it is regrettable that the FG has not taken any concrete step to abate the situation, notwithstanding, he urged the State government to do everything possible to redeem the situation and come to the aid of Lagosians by curtailing the unnecessary hardship that have affected both individual and the State’s economy, trade and business.

The deputy majority leader of the House, Hon Lola Akande in her submission solicited for an intensified enforcement of the State’s existing traffic law to bring the solution under control.

According to her, recalcitrant offenders should be made to face the law, saying that this can only be achieved if the enforcement machinery is strengthened and fortified to bring the culprit to justice.

“The Solution to the problems lies in effective enforcement of the State traffic law. If one offender is punished and prosecuted diligently according to the law, others will comply.”

Other lawmakers who later contributed, agreed with Hon.Lola Akande disposition on the matter, and thereafter the Assembly unanimously pass a resolution urging the State Commissioner of police and as well other relevant security agencies as well as state government agencies responsible for traffic management to enforce compliance with state traffic law and other relevant provision that would restore normalcy and orderliness to the route.
