I Inherited Over 1, 200 Cases of Examination Malpractices – LASU VC
Obafunwa who was addressing the Lagos State House of Assembly on a petition brought before it by Mr. Toviho Oluwaseyi Ezekiel, a student who was not to allowed graduate for partaking in examination malpractices in year one said Toviho’s case could not be treated as an isolated case.
“It was one of the over 1200 cases of exam malpractices that we inherited and we are treating them accordingly. The matter was handled by the Exam Malpractice Committee of the Faculty of Management Sciences as well as others in the school and the University Governing Council is yet to meet since October, 2014, when we got the resolution. The next meeting of the council will hold on January 20th,” he said.
The VC, who was accompanied to the assembly by the VC, Administration and others, said that he could not unilaterally take a decision on the matter as it was part of the re-organisation process being carried out in the school.
The student, Toviho Oluwaseyi Ezekiel had written a petition to the Assembly late 2014 alleging that authorities of LASU failed to submit his name for NYSC programme even, when his results have been released.
Toviho alleged that he was accused of cheating in an examination in 2010, when he was in year one and that he was made to re-write the paper and moved to the next class.
According to him, he eventually went through the programme only to be told that he could not go for his NYSC programme for involving in exam malpractice.
The House then wrote a resolution to the school and advised the management to allow Toviho to graduate and go for his NYSC Programme on compassionate grounds.
However, the matter was revisited last week, when the student wrote another letter to the House that the school was yet to clear him over the matter.
The House subsequently invited the Vice-Chancellor of the School to appear before it over the matter.
While one of the lawmakers, who spoke on the matter, Hon. Moshood Oshun said that the issue was that of exam malpractice and should be treated thus, Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola said that the issue on ground was that of the resolution of the House.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji then said that the Assembly could not interfere with the internal affairs of the school as the laws setting up the school emanated from the House in the first instance.
“We are only appealing that the resolution of the House on the issue should be discussed at the next meeting of the Governing Council of the school and we want the matter to be treated on compassionate ground,” he said.
