December 9, 2014 – Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has threatened to shut down on going registration of residents by the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASSRRA) by June 2015.

The governor who was speaking at an occasion to unveil the Lagos State Resident Card (LSRC) said residents of the state have failed to respond as expected but that the exercise will not go on to times indefinite but that it will be shot down by June.
The governor said government is spending money and paying salaries of staff that have been employed in the exercise. He said the state government has been responsive in its approach to the exercise hence it has refused to shut down the state for 3 days in other to carry out the process.
He called on residents who are yet to take part in the exercise to do so for their own good, stressing that registration will assist the state to plan with accurate data.
Throwing more light on importance of the exercise, the governor alluded to civilized societies where photographs of criminals are released few minutes after crimes are committed adding that it is only possible because structures such as registration has been done that captured fingertips and facial structures adding that if it has happened elsewhere, only the mindset of Nigerians will make it impossible here.
While presenting a historical perspective of the LASRRA, Director General of the agency, Ms. Yinka Fashola said the agency came into existence with the enactment of the LASRRA law in 2011.
She said that over 1,700 staff were employed to kick start the agency and that a total of 2.5 million people have been registered since inception.
She called on those yet to register to do so to enable the state to plan for them.
