December 18, 2014 – The Democratic Watch Group (DWG) has condemned in strong terms the barbarism and crudity of the men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) involved in the brutalization of the Ejeh couple.
DWG Condemns Police Brutality on Ejeh Couple
In a statement signed by Barrister Wale Ogunade and Nelson Ekujumi, Chairman and Secretary respectively, the DWG described the action as shameful, unconstitutional, illegal and an invitation to anarchy.
“We view the action of the police as shameful, unconstitutional, illegal, irresponsible, inhuman, invitation to anarchy and the height of barbarism.
“We also condemn the complicity support given to the alleged policemen involved in this brutalization of the Ejeh couple by the Lagos State police command who initially defended the alleged violation of the rights of citizens without any prior investigation” adding that it is wrong to unprofessionally label the couple as drunkards to justify what they did.
“We are hereby demanding an immediate investigation and prosecution of those involved in this violation of the Nigerian constitution by men and officers of an institution that is supposed to embody discipline, order and respect for the rule of law.
“We are equally demanding for an unreserved apology to be tendered to the Ejeh couple by the Nigeria police force for this barbaric assault on their human dignity in particular and Nigerians in general for the national embarrassment”, the group said.
The group called on the couple to institute legal action against the NPF for assaulting their fundamental human rights as well as defamation of character for being labeled drunkards which has cast aspersion on their character in the eyes of the Nigerian public and the whole world.
