Child Abuse: Ruthless Jolly, Ugandan Maid Bags Four Year Jail
Chief Magistrate Lillian Buchan had on Friday told Tumuhirwe she had committed an “unjustifiable and inexcusable” crime even while dropping torture charge brought against the defendant.
She said the sentence was appropriate in the light of the “ruthlessness exhibited” on an “innocent, helpless child”.
The accused had pleaded guilty to beating and kicking the baby put in her care adding that it was a misplaced aggression because her mother beat her up same day. The toddler’s mother however denied the allegation.
Father of the toddler, Mr. Eric Kamanzi said after the trial that it is not for the family to decide the punishment for the crime she committed.
“We hope this has set an example for other maids out there, that you can’t just go to someone’s house and torture their baby and expect to walk out,”.
The maid had been charged to court for torturing an 18 months toddler while the parents were away from home.
Kamanzi had installed a camera in his home after noticing his daughter had been bruised and was limping.
Fortunately, the footage captured the maid molesting the toddler, hitting the child when she resisted feeding, knocked her on the floor and beat her with a torch, kicked her and later took her to the bathroom to wash off the mess.
The footage of the abuse, which was presented as evidence in court has been download worldwide since the incident occurred.
