Professor Wole Soyinka marks 80 on Sunday, July 13, 2014

December 2, 2014 -Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has called on media practitioners in Nigeria not to describe as shameful what lawmakers of the All Progressive Congress (APC) did by scaling the fence when members of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) locked them behind the walls of the National Assembly.

“The act of scaling the gates and walls to fulfill their duty by the people must be set down as their finest hour. They must be applauded, not derided”, Soyinka said.

Soyinka who was speaking on state of the nation said the shame for what happened on that day should go to the policemen, specifically the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba.

He also condemned President Goodluck Jonathan for what he described as open endorsement of impunity, said the president is totally alienated from reality on the ground.

He equally condemned the NPF for allegedly undermining democratic structure in Nigeria adding that governance has degenerated to such an extent that anybody in uniform can now stop elected representatives of the people.
