November 17, 2014 – Senator Gbenga Asafa representing Lagos East Senatorial District has allayed fears of party members that entry of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal into the Presidential race under the All Progressive Congress (APC) will not in any way affect the fortune of the party.

Ashafa, who spoke at an empowerment programme for those in his constituents, said the APC is committed to ensuring it wrests power from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the 2015 presidential election.

Tambuwal is the latest to enter the race on the platform of the APC and will have the likes of former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, publisher of Leadership Newspapers, Sam Nda-Isaiah and Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha to contend with.

However, Ashafa is optimistic that the party will get power at the centre come 2015..

“APC has the best of leaders in all those that are vying for the presidential race. One of them will be our flagbearer at the presidential election.

“You might think it will break the party if they chose one of them, no, it will never ever happen. We have to free Nigeria from the shackles of poverty, poverty brought to us by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). That is why our symbol is the broom which is to sweep out rubbish from our country”.

Addressing party followers who turned out in large number for the empowerment programme at CMD, Ashafa said a total of 17,395 party members who are artisans, traders, farmers, students and other less privileged people benefitted from various items distributed at previous programmes.

According to him, apart from the weekly empowerment of indigent residents of his constituency, several projects in the 76 constituencies in the district have been executed.

“I am delighted to say that we have successfully executed 76 constituency projects across the senatorial district. Some of these projects include 30 boreholes, 11 classroom blocks, two drainage channels, four ambulance points; 22 power transformers, streetlights on some arterial roads, one skill acquisition centre and one science laboratory”.

Among the items distributed at the empowerment programme include sewing machines, refrigerators, grinding machines, taxis, tricycles among many other items.
