October 6, 2014 – Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngonzi Okonjo-Iweala says government has not thrown under the carpet allegations of missing $10.8 from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), stressing that forensic audit carried out by Price Water House Coopers on alleged unremitted funds will be ready in a number of weeks.

The minister made the revelation while speaking at the 2014 Africa Summit put together by Financial Times in London.

She said it was the public outcry that greeted the revelation that made the Federal Government to request for forensic audit of the corporation by Price Water House Coopers.

She explained that the whistle blower, former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi mentioned several figures, starting with $48billion , $20billion but that the figure that was discovered after reconciliation was $10.8bn.

She said she is concerned about the missing money since it could be invested in critical sectors that would be of immense benefit to the Nigerian people.

“We engaged PwC with the Auditor General taking the lead. They asked for 16 weeks to complete the work; they have spent 11 or 12 weeks so far and they will be done in a couple of weeks,” she said.
