NADINE GORDIMIER (1923 – 2014)
Nadine Gordimier, South African Nobel Laureate is Dead

She wrote more than 30 books, among which are novels My Son’s Story, Burger’s Daughter and July’s People. She jointly won 1974’s Booker Prize for The Conservationist and was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1991.
Gordimer was born near Springs, Gauteng, an East Rand mining town outside Johannesburg. She was born to Isidore Gordimer, a watchmaker from Latvia, while her mother, Hannah (Myers) Gordimer, was from London, England. Her mother was from an assimilated family of Jewish origin and was raised in a secular household.
