June 20, 2014 – The Lagos State Government has set Tuesday, July 1 as deadline for total enforcement of the Strategic Master Plan for Transportation in the state, during which only registered drivers and conductors will be permitted to operate as commercial passenger vehicles in the state.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa who made the revelation in Lagos said that all other vehicles found on Lagos roads will be apprehended.

“To ensure a corporate outlook for transport operators and easy identification, the state government and various transport unions in the state have agreed and approved the designed uniform. It should be noted that the take-off of this component of the policy as well as that of the development of a data base for Lagos public transport system has been affected due to the low level of compliance’, he said.

He explained that with the documentation with the unions, only 24,257 commercial vehicles, 28, 902 drivers, 591 conductors and 7,637 taxis exist in the state, adding that only 12,000 have so far registered with the state government.

Opeifa explained that the ongoing registration exercise has been free without any charge, but that with effect from July 1, 2014, operators who are yet to be captured in the exercise will now pay the stipulated price of N20,000 for commercial passengers vehicle owner, N5,000 for drivers and N2,000 for conductors.

He called on transport unions that have complied to feel free to go about their normal business activities at the commencement of the full enforcement.

The commissioner explained that with effect from that date, all commercial vehicles must align with the state colour scheme for danfo and molues with the black stripes, new uniform and badges for drivers and conductors adding that each commercial vehicle will be fitted with designated route numbers, Names of drivers and conductors as well as phone numbers of Traffic Radio to enable passengers to make call and report any yellow bus seen to be causing obstruction on the highways.

He said this development will enable the state government to block the operator and invite him for interrogation and for necessary correction. This, he believes will restore sanity to Lagos roads.
