Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has warned landlords in the state not to take advantage of networks of roads constructed in their areas to raise rents, stressing that doing so will trigger inflationary trend across the state.

Fashola who spoke while handing over Yaya Abatan Road in Ikeja said an astronomical increment in rent could force the trader next door to double his prices which will make the landlord to pay more for goods and services.

According to him, while roads may have engendered higher values for properties in the area, it need not bring about hike in rent.

The governor said his administration is working hard to make tenants own homes of their own. He said he is not providing low cost housing since those who voted for him are not low cost people.

He explained that the road handed over is 2.9 kilometers and that it is built to last for 25 years if it is used very well.

“Don’t cut the road, don’t dump refuse in the drainage”, he said, stressing that service ducts have been provided for those interested laying pipes and cables.

Earlier in his speech, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Kadiri Hamzat said the road was conceived under strategic inner road development programme, which identifies critical high volume traffic bearing roads for upgrade and reconstruction.

“The Yaya Abatan Road is one such roads”, he said adding that it is connected with roads like Oyemekun Street, Kayode Street, College Road Extention and Haruna Street. He said these roads were constructed to serve as alternative routes before construction of the Yaya Abatan Road.
