Majidun Boat Mishap Survivor Join others in Protest March, Recounts Ordeal

boat-lagos-2One of the survivors of the boat mishap at Majidun river in Ikorodu, Lagos, Mr. Mobolaji Raimi today joined his colleagues in a protest march to the Lagos State House of Assembly, calling on the state government to enforce all regulations regarding operation of ferries in the state.

Raimi described incidence of boat mishap as traumatic adding that he and his colleagues on board left Ebute Ero around 5:30am when their boat hits an object and capsized.

“Fortunately for us, our captain were able to call Lagos State Waterways Authority, (LASWA), and while some of us jumped inside the water before I was rescued by the fisherman.

He debunked the reports of some media that the boat was overloaded, saying all of them were on life jacket contrary to the report I heard.

“I was the last person rescued while bell marine came to save others. I will say that there are so many things to be done”, he added.

The group, led by Akeem Adeyoola appealed to state government to create an enabling environment in the waterways.

Part of their request include standardization of passenger boat architecture to ensure safety, regular clearing/dredging of the passage way for the small ferry boats as well as other transportation designated ferries and opening up of the Ebute-Ipakodo, Ikorodu jetty for public use among others.
