Not less than sixteen(16) people involved in the business of illegal sand dredging along the Lagos waterfront in Ikorodu, Ayetoro and Ijede have been arrested by the Lagos State Government.

They were arrested by a combined team of the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development in conjunction with the Task Force on Environmental and Special offenses.

The culprit now in detention awaiting prosecution include Mr. N.O Orisamugbeyin of Fitz Patricks Nig Ltd., Messers Adebowale Ogunfemi, Sunday Ugwu, Monday Sagbo and Martins from World Class dredgers Ltd, as well as Origin Nig Ltd MDS Dredgers.

Dredging machines were also confiscated in some of the areas when those involved in the activities took to their heels on sighting the enforcement team.

Speaking on the development, Commissioner for the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Prince Adesegun Oniru warned against illegal dredging in the state and promised stiffer penalties against illegal dredging.

He said the ministry will not relent until activities of illegal sand miners are brought to a halt in the state.
