Richest black woman in the world, Mrs. Modupe Alakija on Thursday donated a block of 18 classrooms in Sabo Oniba, Ojo, to the Lagos State Government.

Each classroom has a space provided for 30 students, modern chairs, fans with all the floors well laid with modern tiles in addition to a standard football pitch.

Named after her mother, Alice Ogbara, Alakija said the Alice Ogbara Memorial Junior Secondary School was built in memory of her mother in line with her vision to use education to empower Nigerian youths, saying no fewer than 116 students have benefited from her scholarship awards from secondary school to university level.

” Education is the best legacy any parent can give the children . If the foundation of a child’s education is not solid it will not make any impact,” she added. Alakija implored other philanthropists in the country to invest in education with a view to empowering the nation’s teeming youths.
She said she is currently building Bishop Ajayi Crowther University as part of her effort to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria.

Also speaking, Lagos State Governor Mr. Babatunde Fashola said education remains the most important currency in the world, urging well meaning individuals and corporate organisations to emulate the Alakija’s support for education in the country.
” Private sector participation in educational development is required to raise the standard of education . Let parents , leaders of the communities show more commitment to education”.
The governor said the state government’s huge investment in education has enhanced quality of education in the state, saying performance of students in West Africa School Certificate Examination has moved up from ten percent to 41percent.
