Lagos State Government has threatened to pull down all structures built under high tension electricity cables across the state.

Commissioner for Environment Mr. Tunji Bello made the revelation while fielding questions from journalists after the November edition of the monthly environmental sanitation in Ayobo Ipaja area of the state. He said the state government decided to remove all such structure to protect lives and properties.

Bello who fumed at the flagrant violation of the physical planning laws of the state said apart from the distortion of its environment many lives were endanger by the practice.

“How can people be erecting structures under high tension cable? It is a noted matter over the years that people shouldn’t build under the high tension cable and pole. But look at that place, the entire area was unplanned. And they are demanding for drainage.

“That place was ordinarily a wet land. And we all know the nature of wetland especially what it does to nature. And they want us to construct drainage under high tension, who will ever do that? We cannot do drainage under high tension.

“If fact what we should do is to demolish the entire house under the high tension pole and I have instructed the ministry of Physical planning and urban development, to take note and deal with that. They have invaded the place and destroy the natural habitat”.

Also speaking the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Works and Infrastructure Engineer Ganiyu Johnson said progress has been made on Ipaja-Ayobo road, assuring that it will soon be completed.
“You will all agree with me that the road has been defined and the right of way is established. The drainage lines have been marked and the interlocking blockings are ready for fixing. On the inner road, we all saw various inner roads at different levels of completion.

“Road construction is not something one can embark upon over night. It requires process. And government is still embarking on the construction of more inner roads. Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA is a developing community. And there is need for us to do more there and that is why the state government is concentrating on more inner roads in the council to complement the Ayobo-Ipaja road, which is the major road in the council,” he said.
