The Lagos State Government today paid a total sum of 95,463, 780,20 kobo to 1, 246 indigent students of Lagos origin in university as bursary.

While addressing the beneficiary, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Otunba Fatai Olajide Olukoga said each beneficiary is entitled to an amount ranging from N50, 000.00 to N80, 000.00 for university students for the year 2011/2012 to cushion the effect of increase in tuition fees, adding that students in Law School and Maritime Academy in thesame period will receive N200, 000 each as bursary.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire used th occasion to reiterate the commitment of the Lagos State Government to provide quality education and reduce the financial burden of students to the barest minimum.

Orelope-Adefulire who was represented by Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Wale Ahmed said government has recognized education both as a necessity and investment which everybody must embrace with the seriousness it deserves in order to achieve and ensure secured future for our youths.

She explained that the provision of quality education is capital intensive and therefore implored individual and corporate organizations to support the present administration’s initiative on the need for Public Private Partnership (PPP) in education adding that this is not just a social responsibility but “helping to invest and build a future for Nigeria.

Present at the ceremony are members of the Lagos State Executive Council, Panel members of the Lagos State Scholarship Board, Senior Government Officials as well as a large number of the awardees in Lagos State University, Law School and Maritime Academy.
