The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola said today that the state government has spent over N50 billion on repairs of Federal Roads in the state. Fashola made the revelation while speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on wharf landing fee collection in Lagos put together by the state government.

He told those at the ceremony that all that the state government got for putting federal roads in good condition was just acknowledgement and that nobody has made efforts to refund the money to the state.

He explained that that there are 117 federal roads in Lagos, 328 state roads and 6, 415 local government roads in the state. He said it is wrong from members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RETEAN) to complain that wharf landing fee charged by local government officials are too high when it is meant to be paid by owners of goods in transit.

Fashola who said that the state government charges N1, 000 for 40 feet container, N500 for 20 feet container said that all the fees go straight into the account of the local government. He called on those affected to pay the fees so as to enable the local government perform their duties.

Earlier, Special Adviser to the Governor on Justice Reform, Mr. Olanrewaju Akinsola said that those resident in the state have good reasons to comply with payment of the Wharf Landing Fee charged by local governments adding that unlike in the past when truck drivers are disturbed from one local government to the other, the fee is now paid once. He said once payment is made the driver will have to obtain receipt which he will present to law enforcement officers while in transit.
