Activities are now in top gear to put into full swing the regional under-18 football competition, tagged Obafemi Awolowo Liberty Cup.

The competition which will feature teenagers from Delta State, Lagos, Edo, Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Oyo State is aimed at re-enacting the spirit of unity among the people that were once in one political and social cultural block, Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Ekiti, Mr. Adewale Adeoye and Special Assistant to the Lagos State Government on Regional Integration, Mr. Adetunji Adebiyi said in a statement.

He said that the football competition, named after the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo will further unite the people of the Southwest and rekindle the spirit of brotherhood and constructively engage the huge population of young population which are often very agile.

“This event is also expected to raise the consciousness of the people on the link between sports and good health apart from promoting football talent hunt among young people under 18 years,” he said stressing that at least 48 matches will be played on home and away basis with a grand finale to be hosted in one of the states.

“When young people are constructively engaged, the risk of their being associated with social vices like kidnapping and terrorism will be drastically reduced”, Adeoye said in the statement. The competition will commence in August, 2013.
