ABUJA, Nigeria – Not less than 10, 860 Nigerians are currently languishing in South African prisons, while 19 Nigerians have been killed as a result of police brutality in South Africa.

This information was conveyed to President Muhammadu Buhari through his Special Envoy to South Africa, Ambassador Ahmed Rufai Abubakar who has been on a fact finding mission to South Africa.

According to the abdridged report made available to the media, South Africa confirmed that only 89 Nigerians have been killed in South Africa and the deaths were not related to xenophobia.

The envoy gathered that between December 2017 and September 2019, 89 Nigerians were killed in South Africa, 39 of them slain by their compatriots due to drugs related disputes.

South Africa admitted that 19 of the death arose from police brutality while the rest were due to other causes. The envoy also revealed that between 300,000 to 400,000 Nigerians are in South Africa, 10,860 are currently in prison serving various terms but 60 percent of these inmates are in for drug-related crimes.
