HARARE, Zimbabwe – The whereabout of President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe remains unknown as the military takes over control of Harare, capital of Zimbabwe.




The military stormed the street after Mugabe sacked his deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa, a leading member in Zanu-PF led by Mr Mugabe’s wife Grace to pave way for her to succeed Robert Mugabe.

In a statement on national TV, Maj Gen Sibusiso Moyo said it took over to deal with criminal elements close to Mr Mugabe whom the military said have caused “social and economic suffering”.

He said it wasn’t a coup even as former Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai believes the contrary.

So far, some ministers have been arrested. Major Gen. Moyo said President Robert Mugabe, who has been in power since 1980, is safe but did not disclose his whereabout.

Meanwhile the UK Foreign Office has advised Britons “currently in Harare to remain in their home or in their accommodation until the situation becomes clearer”, while the US embassy in Harare advised US citizens in Zimbabwe has advises citizens to lie low until further notice.

“We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes… that are causing social and economic suffering in the country . As soon as we have accomplished our mission, we expect that the situation will return to normalcy, ” Moyo said.
