US, February 06, 2016 – US Astronaut, Edgar Mitchell is dead. He was 85.

Edgar, the 6th American astronaut to walk on the moon died in an hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida, a day to the 45th anniversary of the team that embarked on Apollo 14 mission.

He was part of the Apollo 14 mission in 1971 and spent more than nine hours in the Moon conducting experiments.

The mission is seen as the fourth in the US Apollo series, and the first to follow the ill-fated Apollo 13 which aborted its attempt to land, following an oxygen tank explosion.

His crewmate, Captain Alan B. Shepard Jr., made it safely to the lunar surface. “Their landing site was the Fra Mauro Highlands, a hilly area that was the target of the failed Apollo 13 mission”, the BBC reported.
