IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – Unemployment is on the rise with recent statistics churned out by the National Bureau of Statistics.

According to the NBS, 11.55 million people are unemployed by the forth quarter of 2016 , about 14.2 percent on the rise. Life is beautiful if you have a job, most especially if it is a high paying job. Nevertheless, the fact remains that someday you will be unemployed, which underscores the need to contemplate which way to go even before one is confronted with the reality.

Every Monday, we shall address one area of an SMSE. We are kicking off the edition with Catfish Farming.

To start the business of Catfish farming, you will need any of the following depending on availability of cash: a piece of land, reservoir, which could be concrete reservoir, plastic tank or natural pond created on the bare floor. You also need materials like PH metre to test alkalinity of the water , nets and fish feed and then the fish fries or fingerlines if that is what you prefer.

You can start small or big with just a plastic drum in your room or compound or with several plastic pond/reservoir in your compound or land with provision for drainage.

You can do it in either ways. You can buy fish fries, raise them to fingerlines and sell or raise them till they are matured for food and you sell. However, experts suggest that you hatch the fish fries if you have the knowledge and equipment to do so. But it is cheaper to hatch the eggs than buy, they have suggested. But try not to overstock as this will hamper growth. As they grow, put fishes of same size together to aviod a situation where bigger fishes will eat up the smaller ones.

It you decide to use pond carved on the soil, it must be on clay soil. But if you opt for concrete pond, it must be constructed with the supervision of an expert. This is because of technicalities and chemicals needed to make the pond liveable for the fishes. Aviod areas prone to flood. The pond must be fertilised before filling it with water. The pond should be left for about a week before stocking with fish fries. Ensure you cover your pond with net to prevent predators. Feeding takes most of your investment. You feed three times a day. You can also use local food. Experts suggest that you stop feeding once the fishes stop rushing the food, otherwise you will waste the food.
