February 21, 2015 – Lagos State Government has sworn in Mrs. Folashade Sherifat Jaji as 18th Head of Service(HOS) in the state.  She was sworn in just as the former HOS, Mrs. Oluseyi Williams retired after putting 35 years in service.  She will however retire this year.

She was until her appointment, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pension. She was born 10th March 1957 and joined the Lagos State Public Service  as an Administrative Officer in October 1980. She is a graduate of Chemistry from the University of Ibadan.

She also holds a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Public Administration from the University of Lagos in 1985 in addition to a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Lagos in 1989.

She was first appointed as a Permanent Secretary in the Civil Service of the State in February 2005, overseeing the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).

She was thereafter reassigned to the Teachers Establishments and Pensions Office (TEPO) between 2008 and 2011 and later posted to the Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pensions from 2011 where she served until the latest appointment.

Jaji has also served in several ministries and agencies including the Teaching Service Commission, the General Service Bureau/Public Service Office, State Tenders Board, the Civil Service Commission, the Programmes and Budget Department of the defunct Military Governor’s Office and Political Affairs Department of the Governor’s Office.

A member of the Institute of Directors (IOD) Nigeria, Jaji is married with children.

While congratulating her, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola said existing rules allows him to choose from the body of permanent secretaries.

“It doesn’t say anymore, it doesn’t obligate me to pick the most senior and does not stop me from picking the most junior. But we have as usual gone by merit not only by picking the most senior but the most senior who has merited the appointment and I think that it should give comfort to the public service at large that hard work and merit would always get rewarded in this state”, he added.

He said the number of women appointed in public office should not count as an achievement.

“I think that women must resist this kind of mentality. I don’t think it is an achievement to pick a woman to high office on merit and in Lagos State certainly it is not an achievement for us because it is a way of life here,” the governor said.

While responding, Jaji pledged to build on the modest efforts and contributions of her predecessors in office and called on public servants to redouble their efforts in the quest to make life more meaningful for all.
