WASHINGTON, United States – The United States has described Palm Sunday attacks on Tanta and Alexandra, Christian places of worship in Egypt as nothing but barbaric.




At least 44 people were killed and several others injured when two suicide bombers from the Islamic State carried out the blasts.

One targeted St George’s Coptic church in the northern city of Tanta, where 27 people were killed, the health ministry said.

In a statement, Acting Spokesman, Secretary of State, Mark C. Toner said the United States condemns in the strongest terms the barbaric attacks on Christian places of worship in Tanta and Alexandria that killed dozens of innocent people and injured many more on this holy day of Palm Sunday.

“We express our condolences to the families and friends of the victims and wish a quick recovery for all those injured.

“The United States will continue to support Egypt’s security and stability in its efforts to defeat terrorism”, he said.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has announced a three-month state of emergency after attacks on two Coptic churches.

The measure will allow authorities to make arrests without warrants and search people’s homes. Emergency measures include:



Further restrictions on freedom of movement and gatherings ;Monitoring of all forms of communication; Entitles president to confiscate or shut down media outlets; Allows any property to be placed under control of security forces; Deployment of security forces to enforce measures and arrest of anyone suspected of violating state of emergency
