ABEOKUTA, Ogun, Nigeria – The Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led Government of Ogun State has lifted the self imposed moratorium on death sentence/capital punishment on criminal cases in accordance with due process of law with immediate effect.

The Ogun State Government announced the development in a statement signed by Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olumide Ayeni.

According to him, the Ogun State Government made the announcement after due consideration and review of all acailable facts and circumstances having regards to its obligation in the interest of sustainable peace, order, security and good governance.

The statement added that available records suggests that criminal activity of heinois nature will be on the rise without effective deterrence of death penalty or capital punishment, especially when innocent lives are lost in the process.

He said the government studied the situation in Edo State where the availability and willingness to effect the death penalty/capital punishment to sanction kidnapping and related crimes has led to a sharp decline of those crimes in that state.

He assured all that the sanctions will be carried out responsibly.
