NUJ CALLS ON MEDIA OUTFITS INDEBTED TO WORKERS TO PAY WHAT THEY OWE

ADO EKITI, Ekiti, Nigeria – The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ has called on media outfits owing salaries to pay up what they owe to protect journalists from the harsh economic reality.




The NUJ made the plea in a communique issued at the end of Zone B meeting in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
“That all print media houses that are owing workers’ salaries pay up immediately, to safe those being owed from the excruciating effects of harsh economy facing the country”, the NUJ said.

It noted that condition of facilities and equipment in many state and federal government-owned media houses are so poor that it has effectively limited the productivity of the media workers using them.

The Union demanded complete overhaul of the equipment and facilities to enable workers do their job. It also called for proper funding of publicly owned media houses to allow them cope with the challenges new entrants into the media business pose to them.

It called on followers in the country and NUJ in particular to desist from putting undue pressure and making demands they know people in authority cannot fulfill.

The union commended northern governors for the matured manner they handled the issue of quit notice of October 1st, some youths handed down to Igbos residing in the north, nothing that the development avioded what would have been a catastrophe.

It called on media practitioners to embrace the biometric registration exercise.
