IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – There was mild drama this morning following an explosion at one of the courts at Ikeja High Court. The explosion occurred at about 9.30 am when the court was preparing to sit.
The court was already filled with litigants when the compressor in one of the air-conditioners exploded forcing litigants and others to run for life.
When our reporter arrived the court just siting atop Skyebank, the faulty air-conditioner has been disconnected. An official of the maintenance department was on ground attending to the faulty appliance including the ceiling fan directly on top of the space reserved for the presiding judge.
Our reporter could still perceive the smell of burnt objects in the surrounding. The incident forced Justice Emeya to adjourn sitting for the day.
The registrar was also seen calling cases and assigning new dates to litigants.
Some of the lawyers who spoke to our reporter were however not happy with the reassignment of cases scheduled for the day.
“What happened was not enough for the judge not to sit. It was just the compressor of one of the ACs that exploded probably due to gas pressure”, he said.
