The Lagos State Government is now set to go into confrontation with operators of commercial vehicles in the state over their failure to register in line with Regulation 41 of the Lagos Road Traffic Law 2012.

Commissioner for Transportation, Comrade Kayode Opeifa who made the revelation in Lagos said the directive is purely for security reason adding that with effect from Saturday, February 1, 2014, the state government would begin to clamp down on commercial vehicles in the state.

He said operators of commercial vehicles have been given enough time to register their vehicles in line with the law since November 1, 2013.

Opeifa who said that the state government has been magnanimous by postponing the day of implementation before now added that anyone found not to have complied with the directive within the stipulated time would be appropriately sanctioned.

He lamented that delay in the documentation process is hindering take off of the implementation of the second stage of the Lagos Traffic Law 2012 , noting that registered operators would be issued with a commercial vehicle passenger operator License from the ministry.

He explained that issuance of conductors and drivers’ badges may commence before March 2014 when operators have received license from the ministry.
He appealed to members of the public to call on owners of commercial vehicles, drivers and conductors within their localities who are yet to register with the Lagos State Government to do so.

Opeifa said the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and men of the Nigerian Police have been directed to impound vehicles belonging to owners who are yet to register and arrest the drivers and conductors.

It would be recalled that the Lagos State Government on Friday, November 1, 2013, commenced the documentation of commercial vehicle operators. While the owners of commercial vehicles are to take their vehicles and register in any of the twenty-one (21) zonal offices of the Vehicle Inspection Services (VIS), the drivers and conductors are to register in any of the Five (5) Lagos State Drivers Institute situated in Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe.
