LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State Government has appealed to members of the National Association of Nigerian students (NANS) and the National Union of the Lagos State Students (NULASS) to suspend the seven-day ultimatum issued to protest the delay in the payment of the bursary of students of Lagos State origin since the process of paying the students on or before the end of the month has already begun.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh who made the appeal in Lagos today reiterated the commitment of the State Government to the welfare of Lagosains especially Students of Lagos State origin.
“The bursary has been approved by the Governor. The Lagos State Scholarship board has begun the process to ensure that the Students are paid before the end of December. There is no excuse for failure and it is almost undeniable that the bursary and scholarship meant for Lagosians is a right and long overdue for payment.
Needless to say that protests sometimes might not solve the problem so much as dialogue is the end product of every agitation. So I appeal to the students to suspend the ultimatum and wait for the payment of their bursary on or before the end of the month,” he said.
The Special Adviser noted that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was committed to the advancement of tertiary institutions in the State hence the State Government has initiated various novel programmes such as ReadySetWork, an entrepreneurship and employability training programme for students in tertiary institutions to prepare them for the world of work.
He added that just last October, no fewer than 1,600 students out of 2000 graduated from the Programme while over 1000 of them were placed in internship with various organizations across the State,
