IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – A nurse, Mr. Abdulkareem Shehu, who posed as a qualified medical doctor and his counterpart, Dr. Farajimakin Olugbenga were today arraigned before a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja for alleged murder of day old baby and her mother same day.
They were arraigned before Justice Hakeem Oshodi on negligence and conspiracy to commit murder. Giving testimony to the incident in court, father of the baby and husband of the dead woman accused the Nurse, Mr. Abdulkareem Shehu, and his counterpart, Dr. Farajimakin Olugbenga for negligence leading to death of his wife and baby at Glorious Hospital Medical Clinic, Ogba after a successful caeserean section.
Husband of the deceased woman, Emanuel Omohodo, who said he was married to his wife for 16 years with 3 kids, Sonia Olohiaremae omohodo, Raymond Omohodo and Emmanuella Omozeze Omohodo said his wife got pregnant in December 2015 but that on Sunday June 5, 2016, the wife, now deceased woke up and complained of blood stain in her underwear, forcing him to seek the help of the supposed medical doctor at Glorious Hospital Medical Clinic where the wife had registered for antenanal very close to her shop.
According to him, on getting to the hospital, the nurse, posing as a medical doctor said his eight months old pregnant wife will die if she goes into labour in that condition and that a caeserean section must be done to save mother and child.
After signing the consent form, he said his wife was wheeled into the theatre while he waited in the doctor’s office. He said after some time, his baby was brought out to him where he was seated and told that the baby had respiratory problem.
He narrated that he was given a referral form to Joe Memorial Hospital that the case is beyond the capability of the hospital. But on getting to the hospital, the doctor on duty told him, that the the baby be placed on oxygen if he is having difficulty in breathing. It was during a phone call that the Nurse/fake doctor owned up that his hospital lacked oxygen, and that what was left was exhuasted a day before.
He narrated that the doctor on duty at Joe Morial Hospital queried the rationale for going ahead with such a delicate operation without a standby oxygen and declined to accept the referral on the basis that it could be an errorneous one.
He then approached Standard Life Clinic which agreed to receive the baby but the baby died before he could be admitted. He told the court that it was on his way to bury his day old baby, that he received a call from , the Nurse/fake doctor, Mr. Abdulkareem Shehu that his wife in Glorious Hospital Clinic has died.
He said that it was when he reported the matter to the police that , Mr. Abdulkareem Shehu confessed that he is not a doctor but a nurse.
Justice Hakeem Oshodi has adjourned the case to 28th February for continuation of trial.
