OGBA, Lagos, Nigeria– An architect, Gbenga Daniel(48), son of the prominent Lagos based art master, Professor Yusuf Grillo has approached a Lagos customary court sitting in Agege, Lagos to end his eight year marriage to Adanna.

He told the court that his eight year old marriage to Adanna has gone out of steam. He cited domestic abuse and lack of love, noting that the woman in question is arrogant and disrespectful.

“My wife has been stubborn since the inception of the union; she has no iota of respect for me as her husband and it has become irritating living with her. For the past one year, she has not uttered ordinary ‘good morning’ to me and she gets angry over anything which usually leads to a serious misunderstanding between us.

“I can no longer bear the emotional and verbal torture I suffer in her hands, We no longer behave like a couple because my wife does not greet me, neither does she talk to me in the house except to demand for money.”

He said that the woman had not been responsible for his cooking and feeding for the past one year.

“I have been eating outside and my wife does not care whether I am alive or dead. She is not caring and lacks respect for the institution of marriage; please separate us, I can no longer live with her,” he pleaded. Adanna denied the allegations, but urged the court to dissolve her marriage.

Adanna, 29, who hails from Owerri in Imo, described her  husband as a drunk and party freak. She alleged that the petitioner is a serial flirt, who abuses her emotionally.

“My husband `smuggles’ home different women and have sex with them in his matrimonial home. l challenged him about this, he told me he knew the so-called women before me. My husband usually drinks to stupor and misbehaves and this usually leads to serious misunderstandings between us. He goes for parties and does not return till the following day not caring how l feel,” she responded, calling him a wife beater.

“Whenever I challenge him for not coming home it leads to a serious argument and he will pounce on me and turn me to a punching bag.I am going through mental agony and emotional trauma; I, therefore, urged the court to dissolve the marriage,” she said.

The court’s President, Mrs Ibironke Elabor, who  advised the estranged couple to keep the peace, adjourned the case until March 8 for a possible settlement by the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). (NAN)
