GAMBIA – President of Gambia, Yahyah Jammeh has declared a state of emergency citing interference in the internal affairs of Gambia as the basic reason.
Jammeh is under pressure to relinquish power after losing the December 1, 2016 Presidential election to Adama Barrow.
He said the declaration becomes necessary due to the unprecedented and extraordinary amount of foreign inference in the December 1 presidential elections and also in the internal affairs of The Gambia,” Jammeh said on state television.
According to him, the interference has caused “unwarranted hostile atmosphere, threatening the sovereignty, peace, security and stability of the country,” he said.
The state of emergency will last for 7 days but could be extended to 90 days if he gets the backing of the lawmakers,
