ABUJA – Organizers of the annual Nigeria Pitch Awards on Friday commiserated with the players, families, officials and fans of the Chapecoense FC of Brazil over the death of their players and coaching staff in a plane crash on Monday in the mountains of Medellin, Colombia.

Shina Philips, CEO of Matchmakers Consult Limited, organisers of the awards, sympathized with the global football family on “this irreparable loss of football talents”. He described the tragedy as a very sad one that will continue to haunt the entire football fraternity of Brazil and the world at large.

Philips compared the disaster to the 1958 Munich Air Disaster that claimed the lives of some players and officials of the Manchester United FC and the 1993 air crash involving the Zambian National Team.

“These incidents constitute sad reminders of the risk that our footballers are exposed to as they travel across countries and continents to keep club and national engagements.

“Our focus is on Nigerian football players; we are committed to encouraging them and rewarding them by putting in place a credible and transparent reward system which will inspire them to achieve the best they can for their club and fatherland. This is our desire and we are well on the path to achieving this,” he said.

Since its debut in 2013, the Nigeria Pitch Awards have continued to maintain the core values of integrity, transparency and credibility.
