September 3, 2015 – A civil society group, comprising Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Partners for Electoral Reform (PERM) among others have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to promptly reconstitute the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with credible and independent minded Nigerians of unimpeachable integrity through a transparent process.

The group made the observation in a communique arrived at the end of a review session for electoral violence in 2015 general election in Abuja.

In the communique signed by Executive Director, CISLAC, Mr. Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani) and Convener, PERM, the group  called for effective collaboration—through directive by federal government to National Human Rights Commission, Nigeria Police Force and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prosecute all electoral offenders.

In the communique, the group called on all stakeholders to work towards reducing the role of money in politics and the attraction of office to curtail the attitude of do-or-die politics within the political class in Nigeria

“The Government should ensure that all alleged offenders in the 2015 elections are tried and those found guilty are effectively sanctioned to serve as a deterrence to offenders in future elections

“ Government should re-visit all previous recommendations from Commissions set up with a bid to implement them while the relevant agencies should forthwith enforce all relevant laws

“All stakeholders should create a formidable force to demand justice and treat criminal offences as such by ensuring adequate sanctions rather than making it appear as matters than can be resolved politically and allowing offenders to escape justice”, the group said in the communique.
