May 22, 2015 – Lagos State Government has said that it is working with the largest internet search engine, Google to improve education in the state.

Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye made the revelation while speaking at a press briefing in Lagos.

She said that the state is working with Google to improve educational outcomes through the deployment of effective and sustainable technology.

She said that the Google for education partnership involves training of teachers and administrators adding that professional teachers are trained in the use of computer, e-learning, Google productivity tools and other ICT teaching materials to enhance current teaching methods and make learning more interesting  and relevant to  students.

“To date, workshops have been held with over 150 teachers on the use of digital tools in the classroom , using the Google Educator Group”, she said adding that another 500 master trainers and administrators are being trained to train other teachers.

She explained that with the aid of online technology, a virtual resource portal  has been created where teachers can gain access to over 1000 relevant resources in the secondary school curriculum.

“This includes educational video, notes, power points and audio files on various subjects and teaching skills”, she said adding that provision has also been made on the portal for teachers to develop their own content and videos based Nigerian syllabus .

She said that the initiative will augment online content to share best practices starting with a video library of the best teachers delivering lessons in science, mathematics and English Language.

She said that the annual Governor’s Award has become a major boost for  improving students’ academic performance and competitiveness adding that in 2014,  the top 128 junior  and senior secondary schools each received a total of N256 million from the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola.
