May 22, 2015 – Lagos State Government has distributed not less than 535,392 condoms to men and women as part of effort to control spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) s and unwanted pregnancies.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris made the revelation while speaking at a press conference in Lagos. He said that 31, 000 condoms were distributed to females while the remaining 504,393 condoms were distributed to males between 2014 and February this year.
Besides the condoms, the commissioner said that that other contraceptives distributed in the year are 24,347 Depo Povera vials, 16,116 excluton, 5,700 IUCD, 5,040 mycrogynon, 9,900 noristerat ampoules, 3,967 pieces of implanon, 1,300 Jadelle, 18,900 needle and syringes and 560 cycle beads.
He said the state government carried out another review meeting for 230 family planning providers adding that 19 family planning management was carried out in 19 clusters in 20 local governments.
He said that a total number of 8,803 patients were seen at Alausa Staff clinic and that about 3, 272 people were treated for malaria while 1,162 patients were treated for hypertension.
He said that 1,125 private health centres had their registration renewed during the period while 781 health facilities were found wanting. He said seven facilities were however shutdown for health reasons.
Under the Eko Free Health Mission, the commissioner said that a total of 19,468 patients were screened adding that 19, 306 of the total patients screened had various medical conditions and 33 surgical operations were carried out while 129 emergency cases were treated.
He said that a total of 7,030 people were screened for varying ophthalmic conditions at 52 different community centres while 3,612 patients were given glasses. He said that 67 patients successfully had goiter surgery and that 62 patient are awaiting surgery while 12 of them are currently on medication due to abnormal thyroid function.
